Structural bodywork is a holistic, system-based approach to addressing the body. Through movement and static assessment we will seek to uncover the cause of your symptoms and will treat them using a combination of the Anatomy Trains method of Structural Integration and somatic movement therapy. It is an experience that will transform your mind, body, and spirit.
“[This work] is dedicated to the exploration of the human body, based upon the understanding that it carries transformational potential for total being” -Ida P. Rolf
Based off of the work of Ida P Rolf, and developed by Tom Myers, Anatomy Trains Structural Integration is a form of manual therapy which is used to realign the body. Structural BodyworkI is a holistic approach to helping the body find more balance, ease of movement and freedom from pain. It focuses on the fascia of the body which is the connective tissue that surrounds our muscles, groups of muscles, viscera, nerves and arteries; it is the web that holds us together.
Sometimes the source of pain may lie elsewhere and we will investigate based on your postural patterns where the dysfunction may be coming from.
Each session focuses on what structures are not gliding smoothly and also what muscles or groups of muscles are short or restricted as well as long and overloaded. Through standing postural assessment we will explore the relationships between the bony structures of your body. How does your rib cage relate to your pelvis, how does your pelvis relate to your feet? From this assessment we can start to figure our what tissue needs more movement and freedom.
Structural Integration is system based not symptom based approach and this is why it has long lasting effects on the system as a whole. Sessions are usually built into a 3-series, 6-series, or 12-series.
Anatomy Trains Structural Bodywork is designed to help people get out of pain, have more mobility in their body, and to move more freely and with ease. SI is great for people who have dealt with chronic pain, who want to move more freely in their body, and to have more mobility and freedom and more energy in their system.
Structural Integration Bodywork is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while permitting others to glide smoothly over each other.SI aligns and balances the body lengthening and repositioning the fascia. We also will use movement to help us stay out of these long standing postural issues. Gait analysis is a tool used to assess your movement and what your joints are doing during certain points during the journey your body takes through the gait cycle. When one or more joints aren’t moving, all other joints in the body will be affected. When your body reduces movement to protect something, for example due to a previous injury, it exposes other areas which can become at risk. Through a series of exercises, we will encourage your body to come out of these old patterns of movement that are not beneficial to us anymore, and we will explore the “dark zones” creating more choice for your body.
This type of bodywork also addresses the nervous system and our neurovascular tissues. Nerves and arteries can get trapped in the myofascial layers of our body. Nerve and Artery Mobilization is a refined form of connective tissue work. Often a more gentle touch, the nerve and artery release is especially helpful for those who have a nervous disorder or other sensitivities. Through this very specific type of work we are able to release areas of tension to improve muscles function, circulation and reduce pain.
